Nicole Famous has become the first Government employee to been given an electric scooter to test.

The courier's first day on the e-max 90S was Monday. She was so thrilled by the performance she had to come to the Bermuda Sun to brag about the scooter.

"I love it. It's very easy to ride," said Ms Eve. "I'm very honoured to be the first person to be riding this. We're trying to save energy so this is very, very good."

Electric bikes even more convenient with new battery swap station -

  • Hamilton, Bermuda (24th June 2009)

Local owners of the EVT range of electric bikes now have even greater convenience with the introduction of a battery swap station in Hamilton.  The battery swap programme allows bike owners to simply swap out depleted batteries for fully charged ones, allowing them to continue on their way quickly and easily. The swap station, being offered by thegreenhousebermuda and Bicycle Works, is the first of its kind in Bermuda.

Owners of the EVT 168 or EVT 4000e Lithium electric bikes can go to the swap station at Bicycle Works, located on Tumkins Lane, just off Woodlands Road behind Butterfield and Vallis in Hamilton, to exchange their bike’s battery for a fully charged one.  The batteries are easy to remove and insert with no mess with the process taking no more than a couple of minutes ( faster than it takes to stop at a gas station and refuel!!) to complete. To introduce this service Bicycle Works are offering this service free of charge initially. Neil de Ste.Croix of Bicycle Works stated “Being a business that promotes cycling and means that we are more than happy to support thegreenhousebermuda in being a battery station. The island needs to seriously take on board these environmentally friendly initiates for the benefit of our future generations."

Tim Miller of thegreenhousebermuda explains that the battery station helps address one of the few hurdles with electric bikes: “With the new battery swap station, bike owners can now be confident that if they do run out of energy while in Hamilton, they can go to Bicycle Works and swap their batteries out for a fully charged one.”  One charged battery has a range of 40 to 50 km.

The swap station follows the lead of other countries such as Israel, Denmark, the USA and Australia where similar programmes have proved successful.   Some regions are also experimenting with charge stations in major centres and the use of renewable energy such as wind and solar to charge the batteries.

The greenhousebermuda has been working with the EVT model of electric bikes in Bermuda for over three years and have thousands of miles of on-island driving experience with the bikes. The 2009 bikes feature lithium battery power which means a lighter bike with increased range and power over lead acid vehicles.  They still have zero emissions and have a range of 40 to 50 km per battery charge.  Combined with a very low yearly operating cost as the bikes invariably require minimum maintenance, the bikes are ideal for Bermuda’s roads and lifestyle.

“thegreenhousebermuda is committed to the adoption of electric vehicles for Bermuda,” said Mr. Miller.  “With the introduction of the battery swap station we are confident that the community will see that electric vehicles really are a viable solution for Bermuda.”

This first battery swap station will test the concept to see how the programme works.  If it is successful, thegreenhousebermuda will consider extending the stations island-wide.

Experience Bermuda - March 2009

Another Bermudian who’s walking the green walk is Michael Burke, a long-established dive-shop operator and equally devoted environmentalist. Burke’s latest venture is The Greenhouse Bermuda, an organisation dedicated to bringing battery-assisted pedal bikes and battery-powered scooters to the island to help cut down on air and noise pollution. (www.thegreenhousebermuda.com)

“I’m on a crusade here and I hope I can get people to realise it,” says Burke. “In our dive business, we’ve always tried to recycle, so we’re taking it a little further now, looking to have electrical vehicles to get rid of emissions and noise. On our little island here, we have 45,000 vehicles on the road. The scooters and bikes we’re selling have no emissions and no noise. The lithium iron batteries in there are almost totally recyclable, and the frames are aluminium, so they’re recyclable, too.”

Lifelong awareness of environmental issues through his ownership and operation of BlueWater Divers and his advocacy on behalf of Friends of Fish and
Greenrock.org led Michael Burke to create a new business, The Green House Bermuda Electric Vehicles.

“Technology is not our enemy,” quotes his website. “In fact, selecting the right technology is crucial to achieving true sustainability without sacrificing the benefits of our current lifestyle.”

The Royal Gazette - 5th February 2009

The most popular form of transport in the world today is the bicycle. In fact there are millions more bicycles than cars on the roads across the globe and while price is one factor, the cost of fuel and making a decision to be more environmentally friendly, or green, are two more.

In Bermuda more people ride bicycles and scooters than cars, and in the last year the sale of battery-powered scooters has taken off.

While cycling has its benefits to both your health and the environment, let's face it — how many people want to cycle to work only to arrive all hot and sweaty? And while many companies, including The Royal Gazette, have showers and changing facilities for health-conscious staff, many don't.

The Royal Gazette - 4th February 2009

At the Crow Lane roundabout cars sit bumper to bumper. A scooter hits a puddle of oil on the road and goes down. Cars honk at the sudden hold-up in traffic. Unharmed, the scooter roars off into the haze of pollution up ahead. Just another day at 5 p.m. in paradise.

Michael Burke, the owner of a new environmentally friendly company 'thegreenhousebermuda' thinks he knows something that could change this familiar scene, something that could take away the pollution, the oil on the road, the stress, the noise and even the speeding — electric vehicles.

And through thegreenhousebermuda he hopes to soon start selling electric scooters.
